& Fall of the American Programmer</a> (p.313)</font></i></center>

<p><font size=-1>There are three important things for you to realize if
you're going to avoid getting left behind in the software industry: <font color="#CC0000">(</font><font color="#FF0000">1)
it is vital to read important books and journals and attend key professional
conferences, (2) it's an ongoing process since the information you read
today will be obsolete within three to five years, and (3) the company
you work for will probably provide limited support at best and no support
at worst. The majority of programmers and systems analysts cannot depend
on their companies to keep them professionally current; <b>they have to
be willing to invest some of their own time (even vacation time) and money
to keep up with the field.</b></font> (Conversely, an organization that
implicitly dooms its technical staff to obsolescence has no call on its
loyalty: that's one reason the turnover rate among programmers is so much
higher in this country than in Europe and Asia!)</font>
<p><font size=-1>By the way, I strongly suggest that you keep your library
at home. Chances are that it will be ripped off if you keep it in the office
-- and besides, the boss will never give you time to read any of the material!</font>
<br>
<hr SIZE=4 WIDTH="100%">
<center><b><font color="#3333FF">Read Any Good Books Lately?</font></b>
<br><i><font size=-1>Steve Maguire, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1556156502/yoshikisbookshel">Debugging
The Development Process</a> (p.117)</font></i></center>

<p><font size=-1>I read constantly to gain new knowledge and insights.
<font color="#FF0000">Why
spend years of learning by trial and error when I can pick up a good book
and in a few days achieve insights that took someone else decades to formulate?</font>
What a deal. If team members read just six insightful books a year, imagine
how that could influence their work. I particularly like books that transform
insights into strategies you can immediately carry out. That's why I wrote
both <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1556155514/yoshikisbookshel">Writing
Solid Code</a></i> and this book as strategy books. But mine are hardly
the first. <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0070342075/yoshikisbookshel">The
Elements of Programming Style</a></i>, by Brian Kernighan and P.J.Plauger,
was first published in 1974 and is still valuable today. <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0139702512/yoshikisbookshel">Writing
Efficient Programs</a></i>, by John Bentley, is another excellent strategy
book, as is Andrew Koening's <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0201179288/yoshikisbookshel">C
Traps & Pitfalls</a> </i>for C and C++ programmers.</font>
<br><font size=-1>    In addition to these strategy books,
there are dozens of other excellent -- and practical -- books on software
development, from Gerald Weinberg's classic <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0932633420/yoshikisbookshel">The
Psychology of Computer Programming</a></i> to the much more recent <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1556154844/yoshikisbookshel">Code
Complete</a></i>, by Steve McConnell, which includes a full chapter on
"Where to Go for More Information," which brief descriptions of dozens
of the industry's best books, articles, and organizations.</font>
<br><font size=-1>    But don't limit yourself to books
and articles that talk strictly about software development. Mark McCormack's
<i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0553345834/yoshikisbookshel">What
They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School</a></i>, for instance,
may focus on project management at IMG, his sports marketing firm, and
Michael Gerber's <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0887300405/yoshikisbookshel">The
E-Myth</a></i> may focus on how to build franchise operations, but books
like these provide a wealth of information you can apply immediately to
software development. And don't make the mistake of thinking that such
books are suitable only for project leads. The greenest member of the team
can benefit from such books.</font>
