PCI driver programming in my personal computer

My personal computer is PCI-based. I would like to learn PCI driver programming using this computer. Which component is the saftest one to play around? How could I find PCI related port info about these hardware component in my computer? Anybody please gives me a suggestion on how could I play with pci driver with my computer?
